Basketball as a business, entertainment and pure sport has undergone a radical transformation from the 1970s to the present day. Few names that emerged in those days have endured as clearly to this day as that of Walter Szczerbiak. This American forward of Ukrainian descent and difficult-to-pronounce surname arrived in Madrid in the summer of 1973 with little idea of what awaited him, with the complicated mission of strengthening an already dominant team in Spain, with which he would go on to win three European Cups.
Walter Robert Szczerbiak, known as "Wally" in family and sporting circles, represented a different school of basketball, with characteristics that differed slightly from those of his famous father. To paraphrase Larry Bird when comparing him to Dirk Nowitzki: taller, stronger, faster, but not necessarily a better player, genetics helped him to become a professional in the sport. You could say he was born with a predestined vocation and exceptional physical and technical skills to excel in a highly competitive environment.
