The lockout shortened the 1998-99 season and it was Tim Duncan's second year in the league with the San Antonio Spurs. Coming off the 1998 Rookie of the Year award, expectations were high for The Big Fundamental. The Spurs' No. 21 lived up to all of the high expectations. Duncan finished the season with 11.4 rebounds per game, a figure that placed him among the league's top rebounders. On the offensive end, he contributed 21.7 points per game.
San Antonio finished the season with the league's best record at 37-13 and a positive momentum that carried them through series to defeat the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals in five games, giving the Spurs and their fans their first NBA championship.
